DRAFT STANDARD CODE PREPARED
A rat eats about Jd worth of food a day, and there is one rat fcr every inhabitant of the country, so that the rat population eats about £1,950,900 worth of food each year, according ‘o an estimate by the New Zealand Standards Institute which has prepared and is circulating for comment a draft standard specification covering requirements for rat and mouse poisons. In addition, rats destroy by nollution about 10 times as much as they eat, and are a danger to health because of the viruses they harbour All the latest information on the composition. toxicity, palatability smell and storage stability of a range of poisonous substances in paste, powder, and liquid form, ai-d of prepar ’d solid baits is codified in the draft standard.
Also prescribed are methods of laying the bait, feeding trials on test rats and mice, and a series of tests to establish the efficiency of tl.e poisonous materials and their non-toxicity to domestic animals and birds Comments are being sought rrom all persons interested before the standard is finally •ecommended for adoption.
