70,000 MEN CALLED FOR NOVEMBER (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) • WASHINGTON, September 5. The United States Army to-day ordered 70,000 men to be conscripted in November. This-raises to 170,000 the number yrdered to be conscripted since the outcreak of the Korean war. Tae Air Force and the Navy do not Plan an immediate call for conscripts. Doth services have been building up their manpower with- volunteers and oy the recall of reserves. Conscription is now limited to single o nnn e (^n 19 to 25, J? ut with the goal Jf 3.000,000 men under arms by next June there is every sign that the conscription order will be broadened. A high proportion of the men examined have been rejected by the Army, and Major-General Lewis Hershey. Director of Selective Service, nas asked the Army to lower its stance Navy has called up 88,000 reSm' The Air Force has recalled oo.uuo unorganised reserves plus an unspecified number of organised reserves and National Guard units. The Marines have called up 50,000 unorganised reserves and an unknown number of organised reserve units unorganised reserves are officers and men not formed into specific reserve units.
