SPALDING GOLF TOURNAMENT
LOCKE RETURNS 1 Sf2 FOR 36 HOLES LONDON. June 1. A five-yard putt which rimmed the cup on the eighteenth green and stayed on the lip. robbed Bobby Locke of a new British major competition scoring record in the Spalding £1350 professional 72-hole tournament at Worthing to-day.
Locke had to be satisfied with a second round of 68 to add to his first record-breaking round of 64. and so equal the lowest recorded total of 132 for 36 holes.
While no one could catch up with Locke, Fred Daly, the little Irish golfer, who was open and match play champion in 1947. narrowed the gap with a tremendous record-equalling 64 to finish in second place, two strokes behind Locke.
Dai Rees, the reigning match play champion, produced a typically fighting 67 for third place. Forty-one professionals and one amateur with scores of 145 and better qualified for the final 36 holes tomorrow.
Leading scores were: Locke. 64. 68—132: Daly. 70. 64—134: Rees. 69. 67—136: H. Hassenein. 66. 72—138: M. Faulkner, 67. 71—138; W. Smithers. 69, 70—139; E. Whitcombe. 70. G 9—139; J. Panton. 70. 69—139: G. Mclntosh. 70. 69—139: T. Spence. 70. 69—139. Then follow A. Cerda. J. Hargreaves. H. Riseborough. R. Burton, J. Adams. A. Lacey, and R. Knight, all on 140.
