THEFT OF RIFLE ADMITTED

YOUTH PLACED ON PROBATION (New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, May 29. Arising from the firing of shots outside the Oddfellows’ Hall at Te Awamutu on the night of May 20. these charges were preferred against Victor Wallace Mercep, aged 20. of Te Awamutu (Mr A. R. Hill), before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Hamilton to-day. Mercep admitted the theft of a .22 rifle valued at £l3 10s, the property of Noel Prince, and charges under the Arms Act of procuring a firearm without obtaining a permit and of being in possession of a firearm and ammunition other than for a lawful purpose. The Magistrate placed Mercep on probation for two years with conditions that he is not to have a firearm in his possession, that he must take out and maintain a prohibition order, and that he pays the cost of the prosecution.
