BOTANY CHAIR
DECISION TO POSTPONE ACTION The lack of a chair of botany is considered, by the Professorial Board, to be the greatest single weakness in the science sections of Canterbury University College; but the policy and development committee of the college council has decided to postpone action until the building programme is settled. The rector (Dr. H. R. Hulme) told the council yesterday that this deficiency was particularly unfortunate because of the importance of this subject in New Zealand. The« committee considered that worth-while applicants would not be attracted while inadequate accommodation was available. When there was an early prospect of the School of Engineering being transferred, it would be possible to offer space for a botany department in that building. Professor George Jobberns said that he was keen to see arrangements for botany improved. Personally he thought a timid policy had been adopted. The right man would make his department in spite of difficulties.
