BRITISH TROOPS IN EGYPT

Reported Decision On Evacuation NEGOTIATIONS FOR TREATY (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8.10 p.m.) CAIRO, May 27. Britain is reported to have accepted the Egyptian proposal to evacuate British troops from Egypt, provided that a military alliance is concluded between the two countries. The proposal was accepted in the British reply to a recent Egyptian Note on relations between Britain and Egypt. Informed sources in Cairo believe that an Egyptian memorandum is about to be sent to the British Government saying that the Egyptian Army, with the weapons it has or which it intends to purchase, will be able to defend Egyptian territory. The Memorandum, which was prepared at a “shadow Cabinet” meeting last night, besides insisting on evacuation demands. also asks for the unity of the Nile Valley under the Egyptian Crown. There was a widely shared belief in Cairo to-day that if the present discussions between Egypt and Britain were successful, negotiations for a new treaty may start soon after the arrival next month of Britain's new ambassador, Sir Ralph Stevenson.
