TRYGVE LIE AND PEACE

Sir,—lt could be expected that Mr Lie would be accused of partiality. His selection as referee carried a duty to restrain hotheads and frayed tempers wherever he found them. He has had more than once tn rebuke members on both sides. The pity is he did not find the extra courage to name them. His omission has placed him in the unhappy position of having to call the players in this life-and-death armamental game together for sober reflection. That he has acted before matters reached a final .‘-.age < f desperation is to his undying credit. He proves himself the faithful custodian of the peace he (it is to be hoped we do too) ardently cherishes. Were he permitted, as he evidently is not, to publish his full behind-the-scenes knowledge of United Nations conflicts we should know just where, how and whv that peace is menaced.— Yours, etc., FRANCIS WM. HEAL. May 25, 1950.
