TRAINING OF DOCTORS IN BRITAIN

EXTENDED PERIOD RECOMMENDED LONDON. May 25. Training for British doctors before entering private practice will be extended from five to eight years if recommendations of a special committee of their own professional association# announced to-day, are accepted. The committee was set up by the British Medical Association to study the position of the general practitioner in modern medicine. Its report, which is described as a “new conception in this country and one scarcely formulated in any other.” said that for the first year a newlyqualified doctor should act as a trainee assistant to a general practitioner of no fewer than five years’ standing. The next year would be spent in hospitals in resident appointments, and in the third the doctor could choose supplementary training to be followed. Only then could the doctor practise independently.

During the extra training period, the report said, the doctor should be adequately paid and should take personal responsibility in accordance with his experience.
