ARMS SUPPLY TO MIDDLE EAST
WESTERN STATEMENT WELCOMED (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 26. Commenting on the joint British. French and United Slates statement on the supply of arms to lhe Middle East, countries, the “Daily Telegraph” says: “The three-Power declaration is an important step towards strengthening a key sector in the world-wide front against Communism. “The Middle East is an integral part of the free world's total defence, and Britain, the United States, and France, as lhe chief supplier of arms to the Arab Slates and Israel, bear lhe major Western responsibility in that area. For Britain, a valuable result of the declaration should be the clarification and improvement of our political relations there. “This first, specific expression of the Western Powers’ resolve to act for the prevention of war outside the United Nations is a frank recognition that the United Nations, as it now functions, cannot be relied upon to do so.” In Washington President Truman said that the participation of the United States in the agreement would give ample evidence of America's strong desire to maintain peace.
