RETIRING AGE FOR WOMEN

Sir, —Mrs J. N. Clarke is reported to have referred, at a meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, to the retiring age for women. Of course married women as a rule do not retire until they drop: and, the grandmothers, as a rule, knock off work to carry bricks, by becoming nursie to daughter’s children. However, that may be beside the point; but, may the writer inquire if the 55-year-old spinsters are eligible for the pension, and if not, are they too old to apply for a government job as hospital aide.— Yours, etc., STATUS. May 25, 1950.
