BIRD CHORUS

Sir, —Replying to “Songster’s” letter, I have been commenting for some days on the burst of song from the birds. I have never heard anything to equal it before. To me, there seemed to be several days of this. I did not notice that May 23 was more marked than any other, but living, as I do, close to a bird sanctuary, I have a continuous orchestra and so may have missed this. —Yours, etc., M. G. DAVIES. May 25, 1950. Sir, —I was delighted to read “Songster’s” letter about the sudden burst of song from the birds on May 23, at midmorning. I, too, was fortunate enough to hear it at Rakaia, and drew my husband’s attention to it. Even though the members of the chorus here were only the cheeky sparrows, it was well worth listening to. I am afraid I took time off to stay and hear more, and indeed to conjecture as to whether it was a paean of joy, or only an all-in discussion on some weighty problem of the bird world. The interlude was a source of great pleasure to me, even though I know that most likely those same sparrows wil] take payment from our garden later.—Yours, etc., BIRDLOVER. Rakaia, May 25, 1950.
