FAT SHEEP PRICES HIGHER

HEAVY BEEF EASIER The demand for store sheep, of all sorts was again strong at the Addington market yesterday. The offering contained a big showing of Chatham Islands ewes, and all sold very well. The fat lamb offering was big, but the demand was keen and prices were firmer. Fat sheep also sold well, and both ewes and wethers were up to 2s a head dearer. * Fat cattle were forward in smaller numbers, but the sale was dull, and prices for most descriptions were easier. STORE SHEEP store sheep yarding consisted of 2d50 lambs, 429 two-tooth ewes, 1948 aged ewes, and 904 wethers, a total of 5831 against. 6644 last week. The demand for all classes was strong, and prices were higher. • , ® lambs were of ordinary quality and included many plain lines, but all met a brisk market. A big offering of heavy , steers from the West Coast and Otago, as well as from local sources, came forward, and there were more steers of thjs class than the market could absorb. ‘ Heavy steers w'ere £2 a head cheaper than they were last week, and the best handvweights were £1 cheaper. Good heifers w'ere scarce, as were the best cows, and were par to £1 a head dearer. Plain old cows, which again were entered in large numbers, were very hard to sell. The i demand for good sorts was steady at about last week’s rates, but backward and unattractive catle were hard to sell, and a ■ number were transferred to the store ! pens. Prime large runners made to £l5 Is. others £7 3s 6d to £9 13s 6d; best : suckers, £6 Us to £9 3s 6d. medium , suckers, £4 Is to £5 18s 6d; large calves. I 48s to 635. medium calves 35s to 475, and I small and backward down to 20s. STORE CATTLE The yarding of store cattle was once again substantial, but was not as big as it has been in recent weeks. The offering included a large showing of calves. The demand for steer* calves was better than it has been for some time, and prices were higher by an average of 15s. Heifer calves sold firmly at late rates until toward the end of the sale, when they he - came firmer. Good Aberdeen Angus steer calves made £7 Is to £7 16s, with average quality £4 13s 6d to £6 16s. Good Heueford steer calves made to £7. and lowconditioned and backward down to £4 Ils. Good Aberdeen Angus heifer calves made £4 is to £5 Bs, and inferior and backward made down to £3 8s 6d. A pen of nine two and a half-year Aberdeen s ‘® ers in forward condition made £l6 18s 6d, and eight three and a halfyear made £l7 17s 6d. A pen of 11 18months Aberdeen Angus steers made £9 L 6s ’ odd P ens °f Sood colours made to £9 3s 6d for steers and £7 Is for heifers. DAIRY CATTLE The dairy cattle entry was 65 head and was largely made up of heifers. A good proportion of the offering was of sound Quality, and for this class there was strong demand at prices £2 to £3 higher than at recent sales. Plain and ordinary heifers

were not wanted, but cows of the same class met a rather better demand than they have recently. Best second, third, and fourth calvci - made £IG to £2l 10s. good £lO to £l5, aged and inferior £5 to £9; best heifers. £l7 10s to £2l 10s. with several sales of good Friesians at up to £32 10s; medium heifers £l3 to £l7. and small and backward £5 to £l2. FAT PIGS The porker entry was a fairly heavy one, although not so large as last week. The market was firm for heavy-weights and good quality medium-weights, but the lighter sorts and unfinished tvnes were difficult to dispose of at satisfactory prices Choppers were in medium supply and the market bowed no change Paconers were penned in much smaller numbers, and the .ile was firm on last week s price-, excepting for over-fat types which were three to five shillings easier. Values were:—

Light porkers. £3 4s 6d to £3 19s 6d. Medium porkers. £4 7s 6d to £4 19s 6d. Heavy porkers. £5 7s 6d to £6 4s 6d. Average price per lb. Hjd to 14d. Light baconers. £G 7s Gd to £6 17s 6d Medium baconers, £6 19s fid to £7 12s 6d. Heavy baconers, £7 14s 6d to £8 4s 6d. Extra heavy baconers. £8 9s 6d to £8 17s 6d. Average price per lb, lid to Hid. Choppers, £5 8s 6d to £lO Is. STORE PIGS The store pig entry was a little larger than last week, and consisted mainly of medium and large stores The attendance of buyers was small, but outside competition kept the market several shillings in advance of the rates ruling last week. Values were:— Weaners, 20s to 325. Slips. 33s to 40s. Small stores. 43s to 50s Medium stores. 51s to 555. Large stores, 57s to 655.
