FEWER OUT OF WORK
IMPROVED POSITION IN BRITAIN A further decline in the number of unemployed in Britain is shown in figures issued on May 11 by the Ministry of Labour. The total legistered on April 17 was 329.000. This is 18.300 less than the previous month and the lowest figure since November. There was no change in the total number in civil employment during March, when an increase of 11,000 men was offset by a decrease of 11,000 women. Building and contracting showed a seasonal rise of 20,000, hut the coal mines lost 2700 workers. Total working population, it is estimated. fell by 32,060 (12,000 men and 20.000 women) to 23.303.000. The size of the forces was reduced by 4000 to 713,000.
