SEAMAN’S DEATH AT LYTTELTON

INQUEST ADJOURNED An inquest was opened at Lyttelton on Saturday before the Coroner (Mr Raymond Ferner) into the death of Michael Monogan. aged 28, a seaman whose body was found in the dry-dock at Lyttelton on Friday evening when the dock was pumped out. John Kernaugh, a cadet in the overseas ship Defoe, said that Monogan was a member of the crew. He saw Monogan walk up the gangway of the ship about 6.30 p.m. on April' 29. He appeared to be under the influence of liquor. On reaching the top of the gemgway he lurched and "then fell over the side at the same time grasping a rope. The witness and another cadet went to his assistance, but they were unable to hold him. and Monogan fell between the ship's side and the wharf. • Kenneth Moorhouse McGuire, chief officer of the Defoe, said that the safety rope and not at the gangway were in position. He had seen Monogan in an hotel earlier and he considered that Monogan was under the influence of liquor. The inquest was adjourned sine die.
