SOVIET FISHING FLEET

DEPARTURE FROM BRITISH WATERS (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON. May 23. With British naval aeroplanes circling overhead and newsreel cameramen taking films from nearby ships the Russian fishing flotilla of 31 ships sailed yesterday from British waters towards the Bay of Biscay and the Mediterranean. Naval and coastguard stations reported the movements of each vessel back to the Naval Commander-in-Chief as the fleet steamed in line ahead towards the horizon.

The ships caused widespread curiosity. when they were first sighted in the English Channel on May 17. and when they anchored overnight on May 21 the eve of the Western Union naval manoeuvres in the Channel.

Moscow has stated that the fleet is on its way from the Arctic to the Black Sea for sprat fishing.
