U.S. ARMIES ABROAD

< Commitment Of Forces

VICE-PRESIDENT’S VIEW

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 8.15 p.m.) WASHINGTON. May 23. The Vice-President of the United States (Mr Alben Barkley) said today that he saw no prospect of the United States sending troops to additional countries unless the North Atlantic Pact nations asked for American forces. Mr Barkley, in a speech at New Orleans during the week-end said that the United States must maintain armed forces all over the world and may have to occupy more countries before the cold war is ended.

Mr Barkley to-day said: "I did not have in mind any extension of our occupation I’orces with the possible exception that some countries in the North Atlantic Pact might ask for American forces to be stationed within them to help round out their defences. "I was speaking primarily of our responsibility to maintain our armed forces, and our commitments in countries where such forces already are stationed.”
