CONDITIONS FOR SHEPHERDS

Sir, —I think “Hill Country’s” reply to “Shepherd” is far from the point. Does he think all shepherds live under those conditions? Did he take into consideration the cost of getting a pack of dogs together, costing approximately £5O to £6O? Does he get compensation if he loses three through distemper? No. “Hill Country” did not take these things into consideration. Shepherds work whether it is raining or not. We also work longer hours than the average town worker and get less pay for it. A high-coun-try musterer gets 30s a day and it is seasonal work only. I think if anyone is to get a rise in wages., the shepherd should come first; otherwise the drift to the towns will continue. —Yours, etc., E.P.W. May 22. 1950.
