COST OF LIVING

Sir, —Over the conveniently vague pseudonym of “True Labour,” your correspondent tries to belittle and falsely denounce the couple of thousand Labour partisans who rallied to the prompt alert and correct counterattack against the sabotage of our livelihood. The sneaking proposal to get the members of a workers’ party to send one another to Coventry—for centuries the English equivalent of the concentration camp—will not wash. The action of the leader at the protest meeting was sound; so was the audience, including—excuse the egotism—myself.—Yours, etc., SIDNEY FOURNIER. May 23, 1950. Sir, —How I admire the fine outstanding sportsmanship of the Labour supporters of our country—“ Fair Play,” and such of his ilk, who rush into print to condemn without fair trial a Government only recently elected. They all erv about the raising of subsidies, so I presume they believe in giving the farmer £17.000.000 in money for nothing, which they themselves must find in taxation. I honestly believe the action taken by the Holland Government. will before very long reduce prices on an open market. It is no use squealing now; if people care to wait another two and a half years, they can change the Government if they choose. In the meantime why not give “fair play” and not just talk about being fair? If we don’t help the party in power we merely hinder ourselves.—Yours, etc., LABOUR TURNED NATIONAL. May 23. 1950.
