IMPORT LICENCES
Sir.—Mr Nash should stick to facts and not cloud the issue. Basic import licences issued in October, 1949, for the 1950 period represent at least three-quarters of what will be the ultimate total for the year. Licences other than basic ones cover applications which have been treated on their merits, and a weekly average value tor these falls far short of that figure quoted by Mr Nash. Furthermore, to place the onus on the Customs Department for the alleged action is definitely wrong, unless proof is forthcoming of any irregularity, since the department carries out a policy as dictated by the Government Finally Mr Bowden should publish details of commodities arid values for which any special licences were issued during the period.
