THE CHURCH AND SOCIAL ORDER

Sir, —Now the gaitered-voices have spoken may I enlarge a viewpoint. Reverend gentlemen are halt when they should be heraldic. Rather than apathy, is there not public mistrust to bemoan—not blind, deaf, dumb, nor numb? This tune they pipe? They may entitle it peace. Has not the Church danced oft to war drums? Is it not still so dancing? Their social-economic code? Clear, concise, direct! What in practice? Can the Church expect trust of us, the unwashed, while it persistently gives pride .of place to position, privilege and wealth? Can it honestly say to labour, “Be content with your hire,” and not simultaneously ,t° riches, “Lend and borrow not again”? Such evangel might overturn the world as Marxist Communism threatens to do by force. Complimenting God on his goodness (and telling Him how bad we are) can help us no whit without complementary devotion in work.—Yours, etc.. FRANCIS Wm. HEAL. May 22, 1950.
