CATCHMENT BOARDS

Sir.—ln reply to my letter of -May 13. Mr Machin wants further details. Regarding (1), the comparative costs a chain, this can only be available when the North Canterbury Catchment Board supplies a detailed account showing its cost of above, with names of drains, to the Springs County Council. (2) In support of my statement about lack of adequate maintenance, I wish to invite Mr Machin personally to inspect the Halswell river in the Tai Tapu-Greenpark area. I am sure he will find facts there which make his third query, “administration costs before amalgamation and now.” a matter which can only be considered together with the service that the administration renders to the ratepayers. According to the annual report of the Catchment Board. 1949, the drainage system in the above area involves cleaning twice and sometimes three times a year. I leave it to the ratepayers to decide; facts or otherwise?—Yours, etc.. E. J. STALKER. Greenpark, May 23. 1950.
