BISHOP LYONS

FAREWELL CEREMONIES ARRANGED

Next Sunday, which will be Pentecost Sunday. Bishop Lyons will celebrate Solemn Pontifical Mass in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament at 11 o'clock. This will be the last occasion when he will pontificate in the Cathedral, as he is to leave Christchurch a few days later to take up his office of Auxiliary Bishop to his Eminence Cardinal Gilroy, Archbishop of Sydney.

The same evening at 7 o'clock, Bishop Lyons will be given a Liturgical farewell in the Cathedral. After the Rosary, the Rt. Rev. Monsignor J. A. Kennedy will say goodbye to the Bishop on behalf of the priests, religious, and people of the diocese. An address from the priests will then be read by the Right Rev. Monsignor J. Hanrahan, and a chalice, the gift of the priests, will be presented to the Bishop by the Rt. Rev. Monsignor J. Long. After an address from the laity has been read, Bishop Lyons will speak. Solemn Pontifical Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will close the ceremony. The religious sisters and brothers and the children of the diocese will attend Mass said by Bishop Lyons in the Cathedral on Monday, May 29. At this ceremony the children will present their own special address and spiritual bouquet. At their monthly luncheon tomorrow, the Catholic Men’s Luncheon Club, which was founded by Bishop Lyons in 1948, will offer farewell greetings to his Lordship, who will be the guest on that occasion. Visit to Dunedin To-morrow afternoon Bishop Lyons will pay a private visit to Dunedin to bid farewell to Bishop Whyte and Bishop Kavanagh. He will return to Christchurch on Thursday morning. The parishioners of the Cathedral parish will gather in the Cathedral Parish Hall on Thursday evening, to offer their own special farewell greetings to Bishop Lyons, with whom they have been closely and affectionately associated during the last six years. Next Monday evening, the young men and girl leaders and members of all the Christchurch parochial sections of the Diocesan Catholic Youth Movement will say farewell to Bishop Lyons, who founded the movement in 1946.
