COST OF LIVING

Sir. —l have at last realised why the loyal members of the Labour Party were not present at the meeting protesting against the lilting of subsidies. I am convinced that the meeting was just another move to exploit the position on behalf of the Communist Party. It does seem a farce for so-called Labour men to associate themselves with those who assisted to defeat the Labour Government. The usual propaganda was handed out by the Communists—similar to that which was handed out against the Labour Party during the General Election, and I give every credit to those Labour M.P.’s and also the Labour Party members who refuse to associate themselves with this element.—Yours, etc.. TRUE LABOUR. May 22. 1950. Sir.—Please permit me space to express my indignation at the audacious behaviour of the trade unions since the removal of subsidies. They appear to forget that they are not the Government. When a foreigner comes to this country and inquires about democracy we rep’v that it is the government of the people by the people for the people. Would it not be more correct to say "the government of the people for the unions by the unions?’’—Yours, etc.. WHO’S RUNNING N.Z.? May 22. 1950.
