MARKETING SMALL SEEDS

Sir. —Mr G. C. Warren’s suggestion that some arrangement should be made to bring about a long-term agreement with Britain for the marketing of our seeds has much to recommend it. It should be pointed out, however, that this trade would have to be two-wav. At present the New Zealand Government (past and present) will not issue permits for the importation of British swede, turnip, mangold, and other seeds. It will be very difficult in such circumstances to arrange any marketing agreement. A Hawke's Bay visitor to Britain asked a Ministry of Agriculture official why Britain shut out our seeds. He was immediatclv asked if New Zealand allowed British farm seeds in. and went on to say that until there was a change in attitude mest seeds required would be obtained elsewhere. Perhaps Mr Warren should look at this end before approaching Britain.—Yours, etc.. ONLOOKER. May 22, 1950.
