POWER RESTRICTION

Sir.—l should like to protest against what seems to be a glaring injustice in the present system of power rationing. Ever since the first serious shortage. we in our house have been very frugal users of current, so much so that even in winter our two-monthly bill has usually onlv been 2s or 3s above the minimum amount. On ringing the Municipal Electricity Department inquiry office, and explaining that I could not see how to reduce further. I was blandly told that we must sit in darkness for two nights a week to make the required saving. So now we must sit by the light of a candle, unable to work or read, while our next-door neighbour, who habitually has lights flaring all over his house and has never made the slightest voluntary effort to economise, can reduce his consumption one-sixth without any inconvenience whatever. —Yours, etc., TOO CAREFUL. May 17. 1950. [When this letter was referred to an officer of the Municipal Electricity Department, he suggested the correspondent should refer his complaint personally to the department, .white the reasons for his restricted allocation would be explained.!
