NEARLY £2000 STOLEN

AUCKLAND FIRM’S LOSS (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 22. Nearly £2OOO was stolen from a safe on the premises of Walter Labourne. Ltd., home furnishers, Ponsonby road, during the week-end. The safe, which was on the ground floor, was opened with a key. The cash boxes were rifled and heavy bags of change taken. Cheques were left. The firm had a special sale day on Friday and the takings were heavier than usual. The loss was discovered when the premises were opened this morning. In December. 1945. £lOOO in bank notes of £5O denomination was taken from the firm's office overnight. On an earlier occasion an attempt was made to blow another safe open, but the door jammed. Thieves operated in other parts of i Auckland during the week-end. They forced an entry to the factory of Duncan and Brown, frock manufacturers. New Lynn, and stole goods valued At £2OO. These included frocks, an electric sewing-machine, and other equipment. Thieves entered the Auckland Meat Company's wholesale department in Wakefield street and stole stamps and several small sums of money belonging to the staff. The office at the factory of Walkers Ice Supply Company was entered, but nothing of value was stolen.
