EMPIRE GAMES ATHLETES’ VISIT TO CHRISTCHURCH
A profit of £lOO3 was made on the visit to Christchurch by the Empire Games athletes. This was announced by the organising committee recently. The committee,” which was set up to entertain the teams and conduct the event s , made the following allocations: —Canterbury Centre, New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. £700; Canterbury Centre. New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association £160; Canterbury Centre, New Zealand Cycling Association, £80; Canterbury Wrestling Association, £25; and the provincial council. Amateur Fencing Association. £2O. No donation was made to the Canterbury Boxing Association, which was allowed to retain the staging set up at Wilding Park for a professional fight soon after, nor to the Weight-lifting Association, which was given the staging built for its contests, at a cost of £l7 6s. A letter of appreciation for the hospitality accorded the visitors was received from the manager of British and Welsh swimming teams (Mr F. J. Coyne).
