LIVES LOST BY DROWNING
TOTAL OF 57 IN FIVE MONTHS
NINETEEN FEWER THAN IN PREVIOUS SUMMER (New /-eatand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 21. Drownings in New Zealand in the main summer months of the season just ended totalled 57, or 19 fewer than in the same period (November 1 to March 31) in the previous season. Releasing details to-day, the Govern-ment-sponsored Prevent Drownings Campaign committee said that although a few more people were drowned in the early months of this summer (iiovember, 1949, 10; November. 1948, 7; December, 1949. 18; December, 1948. 16) the main reduction in deaths by drownings had been since January. Details are: 1950. 1949. January 14 19 February .. 11 21 March .. 4 13 Most drownings this summer occurred in rivers (20 out of the total of 57). Other locations were lakes 11, open sea 8, open sumps and drains 5, harbours 4, creeks 4, pools 3, and from boats 2. Details of the drownings this season by age groups are:—five years and under, 10; five to 10 years, 6; 10 to 15 years, 7; 15 to 20 years, 11; 20 to 30 years, 15; 30 to 40 years, 1; 40 to 50 years, 2; 50 to 60 years, 1; ages unspecified, 4.
