CHURCH UNION

DR. FISHER’S VIEWS

COMMENT ON VATICAN STATEMENT

(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, March 9. It would be many years before discussion would be possible on a reunion between the Roman Catholic Church and the r Church of England, said the Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr. G, F. Fisher) at the annual meeting of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge.

Dr. Fisher, who was referring to the recent Vatican instructions on joint activities of Roman Catholics and other Christians, saifi he noted that the Vatican document always put the word “reunion” in inverted commas, and he was glad of that. “Indeed, for my part, I would suggest, as regards any discussions with Rome, that the word ‘reunion’ should not be used at all, for, as this document makes clear, reunion to the Romaii Catholic Church means nothing but submission by the non-Roman Catholic churches to the Pope’s jurisdiction.” Nothing could be better than that the theologians of the different churches should discuss their respective accounts of God’s truth as they saw it, but this was far removed from any discussion or contemplation of reunion. added Dr. Fisher.
