“CHURCH AND STATE IN ENGLAND”

DR. GARBETT PUBLISHES NEW BOOK LONDON, March 8. The Archbishop of York (Dr. C. F. Garbett) to-day warned the Church that rigid control under a totalitarian Government might come in Britain “before many years are over.” In his book, “Church and State in England,” published to-day, Dr. Garbett says: “Before many years are over a predominant party may determine to plate every department of national life completely under the State. In such circumstances it is quite possible that an attempt may be made to turn the established Church into a department of State, rigidly controlled by Government officials.” Dr. Gafbett opposed a complete break between the established Church of- England and the State, and added: “There is little doubt that if the Church of England were disestablished at the present 'time the world would interpret this as a national repudiation of Christianity.”
