RIOT IN DURBAN SUBURB

ARMED POLICE RUSHED TO AREA (Rec. 7 p.m.) CAPE TOWN, Feb. 6. A hundred armed South African police were rushed to the Cato Manor area of Durban last night, to restore order after a clash between a small body of African police and a crowd of Africans.

Three African policemen were injured. The trouble started when an African police constable on patrol duty de? tained an African civilian for carrying a dangerous weapbn. A small group of Africans tried to prevent the arrest. Other police were called for, but wqre soon outnumbered. Cato Manor was One of the worst trouble areas in the three-day Durban riots of January} 1949, when 136 persons were killed and more than 1000 injured.
