MOST BEAUTIFUL STREET

AWARDS IN COUNCIL’S COMPETITION

Severn street, St. Albans, has been placed first in the street competition for the and most beautiful street, organised by the Christchurch City Council. The judges expressed satisfaction with the good response by citizens. Francis avenue, St. Albans, was second, and Halton street, Papanui, was third. More than 60 streets were entered in the competition.

In the section for the most improved street, Blair avenue (Papanui) with 35 points, was placed first, Darley street (Spreydon) 31 points, was second. and Lansbury avenue (Papanui) was third. The judges were Mr E. Taylot. landscape architect of the reserves department of the Christchurch City Council, and Mr G. A. J. Hart, of the Christchurch Beautifying Association, with Mr M. J. Barnett, Director of Parks and Reserves, as arbitrator. They said that Severn street was a beautiful street with a most imposing view from the north end, and that its charm and beauty lay in its simplicity and strength of treatment. The trees were in excellent condition and Jhe only discordant note was the presence of “unsightly power poles and overhead wires,” they said. The Deputy-Mayor (Cr. J. N. Clarke) said yesterday that he hoped that another competition would be arranged in view of the approaching centennial. The prize winners were as follows: —most beautiful streets: Severn street, St. Albans; Francis avenue, St. Albans; Halton street, Papanui; St. James avenue, Papanui; Lingard street, St. Albans; Mersey street, St. Albans; Diamond avenue, Spreydon; Brenchley avenue, Papanui; Mathias street, St. Albans; Chapter street, Papanui-St. Albans; Wilson’s road, St. Martins; Ryan street, Woolston. Most improved streets. Blair avenue, Papanui; Darley street, Spreydon; Lansbury avenue, Papanui; Kenwyn avenue, Papanui; Claremont avenue, Papanui; Keswick street, Woolston’ Stennis avenue, Somerfield; Everard street, Spreydon; Studholme street, Spreydon; McCombs street, Spreydon; Penrith avenue, Spreydon.
