HEAVY RAIN IN NEW SOUTH WALES
FLOODS ISOLATE TOWN (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 6. Swollen by more than six inches of rain in 18 hours, the Capertree creek has burst its banks, isolating the 2000 residents of the shale oil town of Glen Davis. The town bridge is four feet under water, and in some houses the water is seven feet deep. The levees built around the powerhouse proved useless, and all power supplies failed to-day. Heavy rain is continuing throughout New South Wales and is causing some dislocation of air and railway services. By a climatic freak, while Sydney temperatures are well below the February average, Brewarrina, to the north-west, has had temperatures of 104 degrees.
New Iraqi Cabinet—A new Iraqi Cabinet was formed to-day by the former Prime Minister (Tawfiq Suwaidi) to replace the Government that resigned on January 31. The new Ministry succeeds the Government of Ali Jawdat al Ayoubi, which resigned because of financial difficulties and the indecisive results of the recent talks with Egypt on the two countries’ attitude to Syria.—Bagdad, February 5.
