WORLD SUPPLY OF FOOD

REPORT ISSUED IN WASHINGTON

“ MARKETING THE BIGGEST HEADACHE” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 5. The world hunger problem had now reached a point where marketing rather than production was the biggest headache, said the United States Department of Agriculture in its annual report on the world food situation. The report said that hungry people were eating better than at .any time since the war, but that their diets were still below the pre-war level. World food production had risen only 2 or 3 per cent, over that before the war, while the population had increased by more than 10 per cent. The major problem was to funnel food from surplus-producing nations like the United States to countries like India, which needed food but lacked dollars to buy it. The department said that the 1950 crop prospects generally were good, although Russia might have a smaller wheat harvest.
