CHINESE SHIP ARRESTED
AMERICA SEEKS DEBT REPAYMENT (Rec. 8 p.m.) BRISBANE, February 5. The Chinese ship Union Star (3800 tons), which has been arrested in Brisbane, is likely to become the subject of legal argument without precedent in the British Empire. For the first time in legal history, an Australian court has been appointed receiver of a foreign ship. A writ served on the vessel says that the United States Government will foreclose on a mortgage for 500,000 dollars unless the. amount owing is paid. It appoints the Supreme Court of Queensland as receiver of the ship for which the Nationalist Government of China is recognised owner and the China Union Company the charterer. It is feared that, if the ship left Australia, she would fall into the hands of the Chinese Communist Government.
