CHILD ALLOWANCE

Sir—Of a surety during S : r Josevl Ward’s reign in office, the child’allowance was started, but the few who received it only got it after the severest means test, and then only when one was at one’s wits’ end and nigh destitute. When a third child arrived then it was sought to receive the allowance of 2s a week. What a difference in the allowance granted by the Labour Government. With 10s a week for each child, no child in New Zealand to-day needs to look neglected. I am one grateful mother who will always accept the allowance and be eternally grateful—Yours, etc., GINGE OF HAREWOOD. December 20, 1949.
