WOMEN’S VOTES
Sir, —In answer to “A Mere Woman,” about the cost of additional Ministers without portfolio, I refer her to a statement in "The Press” of December 12, 1949, by Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P. Her statement that the Socialistic Government wasted millions of pounds does not coincide with the fact that the same Government was able to finance its share of war expenditure, continue with its socialistic legislation, and was able to repay overseas loans. Socialism, with its humane benefits and the security it gives to the aged, the, weak and to the great mass of the people, will never die, as it is applied Christianity and follows admirably the adage, “Bear ye one another’s burdens.” Private enterprise (mammon) is a creed of man and not >a philosophy.—Yours, etc., H. M. SMITH, President of the Women’s Labour Branch, Rangiora. Rangiora, December 21, 1949. Sir, —Your correspondent “A Mere Woman” hopes that this country will now be rid of socialistic domination. But if Mr Holland retains the social security legislation, the 40-hour week, holidays with pay, and full employment—as he promised in h's last election broadcast—w’ill not the country still be under socialistic domination? It would be interesting to know what "A Mere Woman” thinks about this.— Yours, etc., AMUSED. December 22, 1949.
