EASY WIN FOR WOOLSTON
SOUTH BRIGHTON I BEATEN BY 5 MATCHES TO 1 s The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's competitions were continued at Wilding Park on Saturday with play in the senior men’s grade, first grade (two sections), third grade, and under 21 grade. The grass courts, although slower than the previous Saturday, were in much better condition because of recent rain.
A. N. Bailey, eighth on the ranking ladder, played splendidly to beat R. A. H. Howe, second on the ranking list, in three sets. What Bailey lacks in the way of a smash he makes up for in beautiful stroke-making and cat-like agility. Howe played well, but made too many ill-timed approaches to the net. Bailey and T. W. Withers worked very hard to beat A. R. Cant and Howe in ,the doubles. They attacked relentlessly, Withers in particular playing some fine, powerful shots. He also retrieved well. However, neither could match Cant's angled shots at the net. Cant’s steadiness and positional play were superb and, had Howe played more purposefully, the result might have been closer. Cant was the only South Brighton player to win his singles, and Woolston won by 5 matches to 1. Results were:— SENIOR MEN South Brighton I v. Woolston Singles.—R. A. H. Howe lost to A. N.
