LAWN TENNIS

LOSS TO ILLAWARRA SUBURBS VISITORS HANDICAPPED BY INJURIES (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 12.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 6. The New Zealand women’s tennis team played under considerable difficulties in a match against Illawarra Suburbs at Rockdale to-day. Illawarra won by 8 matches to 1. Early this morning Miss Judy Burke became ill at her hotel, and the manager of the team (Mr Arthur Richards) called a doctor. Miss Burke recovered later, and, although advised not to play, obtained special permission to'appear. The captain of the team. Miss Mavis Kerr, was suffering from an injured right shoulder and tennis elbow in her right arm. She played with her arm bandaged. Miss J. Mac Gibbon suffered from blisters on her feet early in the match, and finished one set after removing her shoes. The Illawarra Suburbs team contained one of Australia’s leading players. Miss Joyce Fitch, and the Australian junior hardcourt champion. Miss Beryl Penrose. Also in the team was a former Australian doubles champion, Mrs McKay. The New Zealand girls found that the slow en-tout-cas courts caused the ball to remain low, and it took them a considerable time to adjust their strokes. Miss Elaine Beecroft was the outstanding player for New Zealand. She won one ctf her two matches. Miss Betty Potter pleased everyone with a delightful net display in weH-fought singles and doubles matches. Results (New Zealand players mentioned first): — Singles Miss Kerr lost to Miss Boyle, 3-6, 0-6; Miss Mac Gibbon lost to Mrs McKay, 0-6. 0-6; Miss Potter lost to Mrs Poole, 1-6, 7-5, 3-6; Miss Beecroft lost to Miss Faulkiner, 7-5. 3-6; 3-6; Miss Attwood lost to Miss Fitch, 1-6, 2-6; Miss Burke lost to Miss Penrose, 0-6, 3-6.
