Chief Accused At Budapest Trial CONFIRMATION OF SENTENCES (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) BUDAPEST, Oct. 15. Laszlo Rajk, a former Hungarian Foreign Minister, and two other defendants in the recent treason trial were hanged in Budapest this morning after the rejection of appeals against their sentences. The other men hanged were Tibor Szonyi, a former central personnel secretary and member of the central committee of the Hungarian Workers’ Party; and Andras Szalai, Szonyi’s former assistant. All three had confessed to and were convicted of espionage, treason and attempts to overthrow the Hungarian Government in complicity with Marshal Tito and the American intelligence service. Two other defendants at the treason trial, which lasted for six days and ended on September 24. were sentenced to lite imprisonment, and one other to nine years’ imprisonment. All these sentences have now been con-' firmed by the Hungarian Supreme Court, to which the defendants had appealed. Lieutenant-General Gyorgy Palffy, a former Chief of Staff of the Hungarian Army and Defence Minister, and one other defendant were sent by the trial court to a military court for retrial.
