MR HELMANN’S CONCERT
Sir,.—l wish to commend both “H.S.K.K.” and “C.F.B” for their outspoken comments on the Heimann concerts. Visiting pianists invariably present programmes consisting of Bach (mostly transcriptions of organ works), Beethoven (“Moonlight,” “Appassionata.” et al.), Schumann (“Carnaval.” Etudes Symphoniques), Chopin (Ballades, Etudes, and Scherzo in B flat minor), and a few modern trifles. I have nothing against these items except the maddening monotony of their presentation, If we accept these things without question, we will get more Heimanns, Duncans. John Charles Thomases instead of Lympany, Ninon Vallin. and Szigeti. -This is a random selection, hut represents both types of artists visiting New Zealand. I fear that the former type will continue to draw the best houses: so continue, “C.F.8.” and “H.5.K.K.,” with your crusade. —Yours, etc.. M. T. DIXON. October 15, 1949.
