SPRING MEETING AT GERALDINE

PERIDOT APPEALS IN MAIN RACE Frances, the Auckland Cup winner last season, gives to-morrow's race for the Geraldine Cup a touch of class. The Bulandshar mare has had three races this season, and she should be nearing race-winning condition. The form candidate for the race, however, is Peridot, winner of the Teschemaker Handicap at Washdyke last Saturday. The Christopher Robin four-year-old has raced consistently for the Riccarton trainer, J. S. Shaw, and with 7-10 he appears easily the best prospect. There was a lot of merit in his effort to win last Saturday after his rider had lost an iron halfway down the straight. Cipher, winner of the Flying Handicap at Washdyke, may extend his record in the Squatters’ Handicap. The Nizami grey was lucky to beat Personality last Saturday, but none of. the others got near him over the final stages. His rise in weight from 7-11 to 8-10 may not stop him. Other brilliant gallopers in the field are The Hob. Theocritus, and Terminus. The Hob won this race last year, that being his first appearance in open company. He had his first race of the season in the sprint at Washdyke, finishing sixth. Theocritus led to the straight in that race and finished fourth. That effort should have improved him. Terminus failed in his two races at Wingatui and he apparently likes making his own rules. Whether he will be allowed to do so to-morrow will probably determine his performance. Riding engagements include:— C. C. Stokes: Cardross, Cipher; D. J. Thistoll: Ryeland; H. W. Hibberd: Indiana, Beau 'Soir, Pacific Edition; S. G. Shaw: Turf Topic; D. Arney: Periwig; G. W.
