FILLIES’ RACE AT TRENTHAM

RACING

SWEET SPRAY’S PROSPECTS

SWAYUP IN FORM FOR SPRINT

The Desert Gold Stakes, one mile, for three-year-old fillies, will be one of the most interesting events on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club s spring meeting at Trentham to-morrow. Sweet Spray, Super Snipe, and Dixie have easily the best form credentials.. The others have, by comparison, weak form backgrounds.

Dixie has won two open sprint races this season. On the first occasion, when receiving 201 b, she beat Gold Script. At Ellerslie last Saturday she gave a good performance in winning the Shorts Handicap, although she had only a head to spare at the finish from Caber Fae. Dixie should be capable of running out a solid mile. She is by the staying sire Finis, from Winning Flight, by Winning Hit from the great brood mare Francolin. Sweet Spray will to-morrow be attempting to score her third successive win for the season. Her first appearance of the season was in the Spring Hack Handicap at Wanganui, and she won by half a length from Inky and Inverness. The Stewards’ Handicap on the second day of th§ Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting was her first race in open company, but she took the promotion in her stride. She won easily after being left three lengths at the start. She beat some useful gallopers, including Solimbine, Opulent, Indian Song, and Virginius.

Sweet Spray is a sister to Sweet Nymph, the leading three-year-old of her year. Tauloch’s half-sister, Super Snipe, in her first appearance of the season, finished third in the Hawke's Bay Guineas on October 1. She looked like winning at the furlong, but lack of racing condition then spoiled her chance. Vivere, a Pictavia filly, has been placed in her last four starts, and is a prospect. Lady Ella has won two six furlong races this season and on each occasion she battled on gamely in close finishes. Fantasy and Fille d’Honneur may do best of the South Island candidates. Fantasy opened her winning career at the Ashburton meeting, and although her record does not compare with the early favourites for the race, she may prove that she is up to the class. Fille d’Honneur gave an attractive performance to run Detention to a neck at the end of a mile at Washdyke last Saturday. Fille d’Honneur was travelling much more strongly at the finish and she impresses as a staying prospect. Brilliant Three-year-olds The Shorts Handicap will mark the first meeting of Gold Script, and Swayup. two of the early favourites for the Wellington Guineas, which will be run on the second day of the meeting. Both these brilliant three-year-olds appear likely to take part in the finish, and Swayup, with his 101 b pull in the weights, may beat the brilliant Auckland colt. They may find False Step, the top weight, their strongest opponent. False Step won four races and £3680 last season, and she scored a comfortable win at Masterton last week under 9-7. She finished fifth in this race last year without the benefit of a race beforehand. Others capable of running prominently are Whitley, Castlebrae, Brookland, Trinidad. Solimbine. and Vitamin. Julius Qaesar and Flying Sovereign may show to more advantage later in the meeting over longer journeys. Riding Engagements Riding engagements include:—W. J.
