“LONG-SIGHTED DECISIONS”
ENDOWMENTS FROM PIONEERS ” “It is interesting to me as a newcomer to look at some of the longsighted decisions which have -been taken in New Zealand, and also some which to me seem the opposite,” said Dr. H. R. Hulme at the Canterbury University College graduation ceremony yesterday. “Hagley Park springs to mind at once as a fitting memorial to the foresight of the early settlers, and, for uj in the university, .an even more .striking example was the provision of endowments for our college—endowments which, up to 20 years ago. enabled it to flourish as a financially independent body. I’m afraid those lands now only bring unless than 10 per cent, of the cost of running the college. I hope and trust that a generous government will continue to increase our income, and more particularly that it will give us a greater freedom in the use of our moneys than we at present enjoy. “Turning To the present day, I wad particularly interested to see that Auckland University College has purchased a site of over 100 acres at Tamaki, and is hoping tq move out there. I would like to congratulate Auckland on their farsighted policy. Sooner or later most universities built in cities have found it necessary to move somewhat away from the centre to more extensive grounds and I am sure Auckland is taking the longsighted view in making this break, wbich will cost them not a little inconvenience at present; but will yield benefits out of all proportion ia the next 100 or 200 years.’* =
