1951 ROWING. REGATTA
AKAROA’S CASE FORVENUE SUPPORT GIVEN AT PUBLIC MEETING . “If the people of Akaroa are behind the application I think the Canterbury centennial championship fegaUa toll be held here in 1951,” said Mr C. A. Stiles, the Canterbury Amateur Rowing Association representative on the New Zealand Rowing Association, at a public meeting at Akaroa this- wepK. The meeting was called by the Mayor. (Mr R. Bruce), who presided. ine meeting decided to appoint those Present as an organising committee, witn Mr W. F. White as interim chairman and Mr W. E. M. Jacobson as interim secretary, to collect information so that Canterbury’s application in October of this year to the New Zealand Rowing Association would be complete in every detail. . Mr Bruce said there was a distinct possibility that the 1951 New Zealand championship regatta’ would be held at Akaroa. The regatta would be one of the features of Canterbury’s centennial games, and as Akaroa had been associated with rowing for many years he had no doubt Akaroa could do its part and organise the fixture. The Canterbury Rowing Association was represented by Messrs B. R. Walker (chairman), C. A. Stiles, J. B. Taylor, and W H. Candy. Mr Stiles said the Canterbury association had formally applied for the championship regatta, on Akaroa’s behalf, two years ago. At that time it was thought Canterbury’s centennial celebrations would be held in 1950 When the were delayed to 1951. Canterbury had withdrawn its application for 1950 and applied for 1951. At the New Zealand Rowing Association meeting last year it was decided that the venue of championship regattas must be fixed 15 months ahead. Next October, the Canterbury association must know its position in regard to the application for the 1951 championship regatta. • “Christchurch Pushing Ahead” Christchurch was pushing ahead with the Kerris reach course on the f Avon, and some North Islanders had questioned the wisdom of holding tne centennial regatta at Akaroa. However, the association felt it was under a moral obligation to support Akaroa’s application. Mr L. J. Vangioni, honorary treasurer of the Akaroa Regatta Club, said he though! there would be no difficulty in raising the necessary finance for the regatta. The Club had decided to call a meeting in October, and hold its annual regatta on Saturday. December 17, 1949. he said. “There is some merit in the ideal that sports and regattas should be spread over Canterbury during the celebrations.” said Mr Walker. “Akaroa, with its strong historical link with the province should share in them.” In reply to the Mayor; Mr Stiles said that as the rowing association’s representative on the Christchurch Centennial Committee, he was sure the committee would assist Akaroa in organising the 1951 centennial regatta. The following organising committee was elected:—Messrs W. F. White (convener). W. E. M. Jacobson (interim secretary). R. Bruce (Mayor), P. G. Riches (town clerk). L. J. Vangioni (honorary treasurer, regatta commit-
tee). W. W. Reid, J. Drummond. £ S. Truman, A. R. Churchill. R. Rhodes 0. Rhodes, and W. Shuttleworth. . j*
