LAMBETH AND BISHOP BARNES
Sir,—-In announcing that the churches “will attack, and continue to attack,” A. Mayell brings ill news. In the past they have attacked so much, ancient cultures, one another, the joy of living and those great men whose God-given insight and intelligence have taught us so much of the marvels of His universe; and all this attacking has bequeathed such a legacy of bitterness, frustration and lack of faith that one had hoped that the churches might at last have learned their lesson and would pursue their tasks with the humility and forbearance enjoined by the Master. As for Amsterdam, it is to be hoped that when the emotional exaltation induced by bright colours, fine raiment and united song has evaporated, it will be replaced by deep soul-searching and humble penitence for those .errors which hiave driven awa so many sincere worshippers of ths Almighty.— Yours, etc.', ■ C. OF E. December 13, 1948. Sir, —“A Very Old Anglican” should be sure of his facts before he dashes pen to paper. It would be nice to see a courteoua apology in print.— Yours, etc., A MIDDLE-AGER. December 14, 1948.
