SOUTH ISLAND 36MILE RACE
B. FROGGATT WINS SENIOR TITLE
Competitors in the 36-rmile South Island road cycling championship conducted by the Southbridge Athletic Club during the week-end on the six mile block course encountered a strong easterly wind and, in places, the unsealed road was not in its best order. The times of B. Froggatt and F. Leathern, who won the senior and junior titles, were good in the conditions.
There were 32 starters and C. Wilcox (10 minutes) went off alone as the limit rider. M. Luke, of Tftnaru, was on the scratch' mark, with K. Johnston, A. J. Howison, B. Froggatt, and I. Gribben. Howison failed to complete the first lap, and Luke was out with half the journey covered. Gribben and Froggatt had caught M. Drake and W. Howison riding off 2min. With 30 miles covered several riders had dropped out, but J. Burgess (4min) and I. Brook (6min) were going well and had a fair lead from I. Hight and F. Leathern (3min). These riders held their positions for the last lap, and in a strong sprint Burgess won the race by half a length. Froggatt took the title from Gribben by the same margin. Results were:—J. Burgess (4min), 1; I. Brook (6min), 2; I. Hight (3min), 3. Fastest times: senior, B. Froggatt, Ihr 44min 50sec; junior, F. Leathern, Ihr 43 min 35 l-ssec. 50 Miles Road Race A field of 54 riders competed in a 50 miles road race from Dunsandel to Ashburton and return on Saturday. Results: J, Doyle (12min), Christchurch, 2hr 28min 9 l-ssec, 1; L. Johnson (16min), Christchurch, 2hr 32min 5 2-ssec, 2; P. Jayet (12min), Avon, 2hr 28min 5 3-ssec, 3; H.
