HELIO MAY BE FAVOURED

RACING

RICCARTON HORSES AT WINGATUI

With Helio, Volomai, and General Argosy engaged, Riccarton stables will hold a strong hand in the Clarendon Hack Handicap for hack stayers, at Wingatui to-day. Helio was one of the six horses to take part in the blanket finish in the Penscroft Hack Handicap, at Ashburton last Saturday, and looked to be a little unlucky that he did not get an opening earlier. Though he has not won beyond a mile. Helio has always given the impression that he will stay longer journeys, and he is bred for the task. He won a division of the Avonhead Hack Handicap on the first day of the Grand National meeting, and on the second day finished solidly into second place behind Coral Arc in the Summer Hack Handicap over nine furlongs. He is very well, and may be the actual favourite to-day. Volomai is running out his hack engagements. He scored a very easy win over a mile and three furlongs at Wingatui last June, but failed badly in the heavy going at Trentham in July. He ran better races at Riccarton last month, and showed further improvement when he won a double at Westport a fortnight ago. The opposition was not strong, but he won very easily on both occasions. He will have the benefit of a 51b apprentice allowance to-day and will be giving Helio

General Argosy has not raced since the Grand National meeting, when he failed at both starts. Before that he had shown good form over a mile at Ashburton. On that occasion he finished on very well, and it seemed that a longer journey would suit him.
