NEW BRIGHTON CLUB

TROTTING

Worthy Dick May Win Pacific Handicap

WAYFARER IN FORM

I Few pacers seen out last season created such a good 1 impression as Good Review, which earned £l9Bl for R. H. j Butterick, who trains him at Rakaia, when he gained four wins / and three minor placings in nine starts. A consistent son of a successful sire in Sandydale, Good Review should prove hard I to beat in the Henry Mace Handicap, the main event on the , programme for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting to- | day.

Most opposition to Good Review is expected to come from County Antrim, a winner in three of his last four races; Bonny Scott, which has done particularly well since finishing third to County Antrim and Starshell in the J. R. D. Johns Handicap at New Brighton on September 11; Proprietor, a place-getter on the second day of the National meeting at Addington; and from Make Believe, which won the Cambridge Handicap in fine style at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on September 11. '

Scholarship followed up his third placing to Lyndaie and Remlap in the Fendalton Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on May 29 with a stout effort to finish second to Baby Grand in fast time in the Heathcote Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on August 28. On the strength of that form, Scholarship will probably be sent out one of the favourites for the Farewell Handicap, the main event for sprinters. Likely types in the field include Sir Vivian, Starshell, Pimpernel, and Carisbrook, and they should be in the picture with Scholarship at the finish.

Elmdale’s second to Spring Fashion in the Brighton. Handicap the meeting at New Brighton on September 11

was full of merit, and he would need to* show little improvement oh that performance to win the Introductory Handicap for H. Greenhorn, who him at Addington.

Promising pacers in the field include Will Scarlett, French Gold, Free .Style, Lusty Bingen, and Red Flight. One of V. Leeming’s team at Prebbleton, Lusty Bingen, which is by Volterra from .Providence, gained a win and two seconds last season, his win being in the Redcastle Trot Handicap at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting on March 13. *

Red Flight showed a lot of ability as a three-year-old last season to be placed in 12 races, his record including a win in the ficst division of the Ashley Trot Handicap of one rhile and five furlongs at the North Canterbury Racing Club’s meeting on October 27, and in the Hillersden Trotting Handicap of one mile and a quarter at the Marlborough Racing Club’s irieeting on April 12. With the race run to suit him, Red Flight may dispute the finish of the Introductory Handicap with Elmdale. Will Scarlett, and Free Style.

Shirley Handicap Conceit, the winner of the Addington Trotting Stakes at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on September 4, appeared certain of finishing in a place with a furlong to go m the Welcome Handicap at New Brighton on September 11, but he broke under pressure and dropped back. If he elects to trot solidly all the way he should go close to winning the Shirley Handicap, in which he may strike most opposition from Merry Man, Mosquito, and Mack Sure. Mack Sure, which is making his first appearance for the season for Mr A. McLean, for whom he is trained at Oamaru by S. Easton, showed his .best form last term to win the second division of the South Hillend Trot Handicap at the Winton Trotting Club’s meeting on December 27. A gelding by Quite Sure from Mahinerangi, he may take a tighter mark this season.

A Large Field With 24 improving pacers, most of which have some good form to their credit, engaged in the Seaview Handicap, inventors are set an intricate problem. Demetrius, Beckleigh, Hall Ace, and Our Nulgie have all been placed in their recent races, and, together with Direct Heir, which won nicely at the trials at Addington on Tuesday, and Gantree, which worked well at Addington on Thursday morning, they should take part in the finish.

Wayfarer and Gay Knight, which were winners last season, were seen at their best when they dead-heated in the Avon Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Clubs meeting on September H. On that form, they will probably dispute favouritism in the BowhiU Handicap. Of the others. Gay Note, Melton, His Excellency, and Sunny Hall may carry most support. The H. F. Nicoll Handicap may prove a stepping-stone to Dominion Handicap company for Java, which is handicapped to give away starts of up to 120 yards. Java, which has shown splendid form on grass tracks, beat David Dryden and Swanee River in the Spring Handicap at the last New Brighton meeting. Together with Dan Martin, which -is making his first appearance for the season, David Dryden and Swanee River appeal as the most likely to divide the prize-money with Java. A Consistent Pacer Worthy Dick, which finished in a place in his .last eight races last season, will probably be sent out a strong favourite for the Pacific Handicap, which has attracted some useful pacers, including Despatch, Kingcobra, On; Approval, arid Melvian. A recent addifl&i to -W.7R; Butt’s team at Templeton, Melvian dhow* ed good form in Southland last season to gain three wins and four minor placings in 12 starts. A promising six-year-old gelding, Melv’an is by Dillon Hall from Cushat, which left other winners, including Liberty Bond and Understudy, to Worthy Bond. Under Butt’s guidance, Melvian should win his Way to good company in Canterbury. Excellent fields are carded- mid, although rain yesterday may make for slow times, patrons should enjoy an interesting day’s sport. Horses in form include: Introductory Handicap: Elmdale, Will Scarlett, Freestyle. Shirley Handicap: Conceit. Merry Man. tylosquito. Seaview Handicap: Demetrius. Beckleigh, Hall Ace. Henry Mace Handicap: County Antrim, Good Review, Bonny Scott. Bowhill Handicap: Wayfarer. Gay Knight, Sunny Hall. H. F. Nicoll Handicap: Java, David Dryden, Dan Martin. Pacific Handicap: Worthy Dick, On Approval. Gold Strike. Farewell Handicap: Scholarship, Sir Vivian, Starshell.

Sand Piper is nicely .placed in the Ferguson Handicap, the main event on the programme for the concluding day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting to-day. Remlap arid Lady Averil, which were both impressive, covered the last two furlongs of their trial in 33 2-5 sec. ' Attack, which did not appear to be able to handle the track conditions on the first day of the meeting, looked well when he Worked with Ikaroa on Thursday morning, sprinting his last two furlongs in 32 seconds.

Ikaroa, which is well placed .in the Oneroa Handicap, covered her last half mile in Imin 7sec.

Sirocco and Trustee were let off with an easy two miles on Thursday morning. With the prospect of a firmer track today. Sirocco may be placed.
