DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB

SALMON SPEAR MAY WIN MAIN RACE

ROBINFAYE FAVOURED FOR MCLEAN STAKES

From Our Own Reporter • _ DUNEDIN, Sept. 24. The prospects are for good going for the opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting at Wingatui - tomorrow. Rain on • Thursday night took the sting out of the going, but the track has dried out quickly and the prospects are for fine weather.

Salmon Spear worked well in his final trial at Invercargill yesterday, and is the likely favourite for the Ranfurly Handicap, the principal event on the programme. The Riccarton candidates, Graeme and Banshee, are sure to give a good account of themselves, and Aganev is also expected to improve on her effort at Ashburton. The going will suit both Aganev and Graeirie. The local candidate. Duvaals, has been working well, and though he is untried at the distance, is expected to see the journey out under his light weight. Robinfaye’s effort over half a mile at Wingatui yesterday has caused her to advance considerably in favouritism in the McLean States. There are bound to be some smart gallopers in the over-sized field engaged, and each training centre has its youngsters with a reputation, but, there is no means of comparison of their merits. The only guides are track gallops and parades. In addition to Robinfaye. Boost and Bosun are Riccarton youngsters that are likely to be prominent. Gold King and Goldstrike are likely to be the best supported of the local youngsters, and both give indications of being very smart. The scratchings to-day were Turf Topic in the Spring Hurdles, Greer Galloway in the McLean Stakes, and Ballochbuie in the Clarendon Hack Handicap.
